Understanding Binocular Specs

• Magnification – The first number (8x, 10x, 12x) indicates how many times larger objects appear. Higher isn't always better—8x-10x is ideal for most handheld use.
• Objective Lens – The second number (42mm, 50mm) indicates lens diameter. Larger objectives gather more light but add weight.
• Exit Pupil – Objective divided by magnification. 4-5mm is ideal for daytime; larger is better for low light.
• Field of View – How wide an area you see at 1,000 yards. Wider is better for scanning and tracking movement.

Choosing Binoculars

For hunting and general outdoor use, 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars balance magnification, light gathering, and portability. Compact 8x25 or 10x25 models fit in a pocket but sacrifice low-light performance. Full-size 10x50 or 12x50 binoculars excel in dim conditions but are heavier. Roof prism designs are slimmer and more durable; porro prism designs often offer better value per dollar.
